One of the more diverse types of Investigation that we are often involved with is that resulting from people calling advertised chat lines. Though all reputable chat lines are regulated there are often groups of people who ‘work together’ in the chat rooms to lure callers into revealing details about themselves, often when they are at their most vulnerable. This may be online or on the telephone; it may involve sensitive adult issues which you would rather keep private

A typical scenario may involve a person who is calling chat lines to speak with both women and men, usually for friendship perhaps during a difficult period of their lives. It is true that thousands of callers use these services every day without incident and the interaction with others if often a way to counter balance boredom or for social contact. Chatline companies in the UK make £850,000,000 a year and thrive on capitalising on people's weak points

There are people who take advantage of users of these services with the objective being to extort money from the caller by claiming or threatening to do certain things unless compliance is met. The ploy will involve several users of the chat line who have contact with one another, relaying messages between each other regarding a particular user who may be on-line at the time, or who is identified by a particular user name who may be a frequent caller to the chat line

Various methods are used that may leave the victim feeling frightened to call the authorities or indeed the owners of the chat line. These may include the threat to ‘expose’ the user of the chat line to friends or family, or to report them to the authorities for alleged breaches of law that may have occurred on the chat line. Often the blackmailers will suggest that evidence is present to prove that a certain act has taken place by claiming to be a 'moderator'
